“If you are not content today, there is nothing you can buy this weekend to change that.” — Joshua Becker
How good is that quote?
It really speaks to my minimalist side.
We live in a world of influencers, consumerism, and Amazon Prime. Anything we see we can buy and have it in our hands in a few days. I am not against Amazon Prime. As a mom who doesn’t realize I need something until I needed it yesterday, Amazon often saves my bacon. Even so, I am against the idea of consumerism or owning things just to own them.
I am also not immune to being influenced by people online. They have perfectly styled homes, picturesque holiday baskets, and all the seasonal home decor. I have had to really switch my mindset to keep myself from trying to keep up with the Joneses. I had to learn be content with what I have.
That mindset shift looks like this. When I see someone’s perfectly styled shelves just in time for whatever holiday, Easter for example, I think, “I could decorate my home like that, and look how cute! It probably doesn’t cost much.” But then I remember that I value minimalism, I hate clutter, and I do not like switching my decor every season. I like my house the way it is.
When I feel this pull to emulate what I’m seeing online, what do I do instead?
By saying, out loud so I can hear it, “That looks so good for them!”
This is my audible reminder that I can love something without needing to own it.
I can see and appreciate a themed basket or a styled home without needing to own it. I can find contentment in what I already own and how my house currently it. If I’m not content now, nothing I can buy is going to make me content.
Contentment is a choice. And I choose to be content with my life the way it is.
Take a real look around at what you have, your home, your lifestyle, and the things you enjoy. Are they really not good enough? Or are they just not the same as what you’re seeing in other’s lives and home or on their Instagram videos?
Everything you see online is a snap-shot, a snippet, of what really is. Once you put that into perspective, you realize you can’t compare your whole life to the fraction of theirs you are seeing.
Take a deep breath and remember – You have enough, you do enough, and you ARE enough.
