What is Bereaved Mother’s Day? It is the Sunday before Mother’s Day (which is also on a Sunday). This day is not intended to exclude the bereaved from traditional Mother’s Day, but to honor them in their own special way. We are still mothers even if we have no living children in our arms.
As soon as we conceive and carry life inside of our womb, we become a mother – a creator of life. Our children will always be a part of us, no matter how long (or short) they stay. Our motherhood will look different than traditional motherhood and most may not recognize the way we mother our babies that are no longer here. But nevertheless, we are mothers and we deserve to claim that title.
{you can read about my baby here}
I heard this quote in the BBC show Call the Midwife and it felt like it was written for us, the bereaved mothers.
Not every garden blooms as we expected.
Despite our care, not every child can thrive.
Tears take the place of rain and the sunshine fails us.
But the buds, however delicate were perfect.
They were real and their fleeting scent will live forever on the air.
Our babies are the flowers, sweet and delicate, some fleeting. They bring so much joy into our gardens and we think of them long after they are gone.
To you, sweet mama, I am sending a gentle Bereaved Mother’s Day and a gentle Mother’s Day.
You are the mother to your babies.
